Itinerary
Day 1: Overnight Flight to Sweden
Day 2: Arrival in Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden.
Join EF Walking Tour of Stockholm.
Meet the EF Tour Guide and take a walking tour through the heart of
Stockholm's historic Old Town, founded in 1255 as a fortification at the
entrance to Lake Milaren. Archaeological relics from excavations here indicates the
presence of Vikings dating back to the 11th century.
Stroll past the Stock Exchange in Stortorget Square or the
Green Market, filled with shops and cafes. See the Renaissance architecture of
the Royal Palace and a famous statue of St. George slaying the dragon.
Day 3: Stockholm
Guided sightseeing tour of Stockholm.
See Stockholm with official tour guide on motor coach. The tour includes visits to
the Royal Opera House, the Parliament, the Royal Palace and the oldest church in
Stockholm dating back to 1306. Visit also the town hall and see the lavishly
decorated Golden Hall where the annual Nobel Prize festivities take place.
Visit to the Vasa.
Visit the historic and well-restored 17th century Vasa, a royal flagship that sanked
before it could leave the city's harbor. It is an ornate eight-level ship that was created
with two gun decks based on orders from King Gustavus Adolphus.
The ship was built to help Sweden battle with Poland.
In 1961, the Swedish Navy restored the ship, which is not preserved in the Vasa Museum.
Enjoy other features of the Museum highlighting a history of the Vasa.
Day 4: Stockholm and Copenhagen
Transfer to Copenhagen via Gränna.
In route to Copenhagen, stop in the Swedish town of Gränna to taste the
famous peppermint rock or "polkagris," at the peppermint rock bakery
founded by Amalia Erikson in 1859.
Continue on across the Oresund Bridge, the world's longest single bridge
carrying both road and railway traffic connecting Sweden to Denmark.
Continue on to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
Day 5: Copenhagen
Guided sightseeing tour of Copenhagen.
Enjoy a guided tour of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy-tale city. Pass by the town hall
and Tivoli Gardens, the city's lively amusement park. See the Christianborg Palace,
seat of the Danish Parliament. Also see the Rosenborg Castle, the old stock exchange
and the Royal Theatre, home of the famous Royal Danish Ballet. Visit the courtyard
of the Amalienborg Palace (the royal residence) before seeing the statue of the
"Little Mermaid" watching over Copenhagen's harbor.
Optional excursion to Elsinore and Kronburg Castle.
Walk in the footsteps of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark,
on an optional journey to the medieval Danish town of Elsinore. Enjoy the scenic
drive along the coast from Copenhagen to Elsinore, 25 miles north of the city.
Visit the famous 400-year-old Kronborg Castle. See the Castle's maze of
secret passageways, the Great Hall, ancient silk and woolen tapestries and the
king and queen's chambers. Hear the story bout the "sleeping ghost of Holger Danske,
famous Viking chief and Danish hero. According to legend, peace will preside in
Denmark only as long as ghost remains sleeping in the dungeon.
Day 6: Copenhagen and Night Ferry
EF walking tour of Copenhagen.
Take walking tour beginning at City Hall Square and see the Old Town.
Stroll along the ströget, a pedestrian street. Visit the Kongens Nytorv
and see the equestrian statue of Christian V, who designed this part of the city.
You will also see the seaport of Nyhavn where Hans Christian Andersen once lived.
Visit to the Round Tower.
Get a panoramic view of Old Copenhagen with a visit to the 17th-century Round
Tower opened in 1642, Europe's oldest functioning observatory. A winding,
685-foot staircase links it to a church and library, which now serves as a concert
exhibition hall. High atop the façade, see the gilded inscription penned by
King Christian IV himself.
Night Cruise to Oslo.
Spend the night in comfortable cabin accommodations
as you cruise through the night to Norway, Land of the Midnight Sun.
Day 7: Oslo
Arrival into Oslofjørd.
Guided sightseeing tour of Oslo.
The tour includes the Rädhuset (town hall) and Akershus Slott
(a fortress built by King Haakon V. Magnusson in 1300).
Continue on for a stop at Vigelandspark, home to the
monumental stone Vigeland sculptures.
Pass the summer and winter residences of the Norwegian Royal Family,
as well as the Nobel Institute, as you make your way to the Bygdøy Peninsula.
View the beautifully preserved authentic 9th-century Viking ships, retrieved from
ritual burial mounds found along the fjords near Oslo. Viking elites wanted to
ensure the dead were well-equipped in the afterlife and carefully
buried people in their ships with all the necessities.
Visit to the Homenkollen Skijumpa and Ski Museum.
Visit the famous world-class ski resort near Oslo. With a visit to the museum,
learn about the history of this Nordic sport and see well-preserved examples of
rudimentary ski equipment dating back to the 1st century.
Day 8: Norwegian Fjord Excursion
Excursion to the fjord region.
Transfer to Myrdal and take a cogwheel train (The Flam Railway) into
the Flam Valley. Enjoy spectacular scenery, including cascading waterfalls
and bright-white glaciers, as your train travels 3,000 feet in 12 miles. From Flam,
enjoy a fjord cruise to Gudvangen and spend the night in the fjord region.

Day 9: Oslo
Transfer to Oslo where you will spend the night.
Day 10: Home
Transfer to the Airport for your return to the United States.

Study Abroad Requirements:
All tour members will designate some aspect of Scandinavian culture, history, art, archaeology,
architecture, political or social system , symbolism or behavior they want to study.
Study tour members are studying on-line and visiting links about the places to be visited.
We will also have one or several half-day meetings in late April to early May.
During the study tour we will keep a journal and take photos for a photographic journal on
our studies and experiences. At dinner, we will spend some time discussing the events of the day.
Students who are studying particular aspects of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian
culture and behavior will be responsible for developing a report on their specific content area(s).
We will then compile our tour findings with pictures, essays and descriptions for publication
on the course Web site for public education and viewing. Tour participants will receive an
EF backpack and journal for the trip. Students will be asked to write up their summary
descriptions on the trip back home for submission before departing the airplane in the US.
