Itinerary
Day 1--Flight to Italy
Day 2 -- Milan & Venice
Arrived in Milan, fashion and finance capital of Italy. Transfer to Romeo and Juliet's Verona. See the town's Roman Arena. You will also see a bronze statue of Juliet, standing below the balcony said to be the one where Juliet called to her Romeo. Arrive in Venice, home of Marco Polo.
Day 3 -- Venice
Guided sightseeing ov Venice.Tour la Serenissima (the city's nickname meaning, "the most serene) at St. Mark's Square. Saw the Grand Canal and the 324-foot Campanile (Bell Tower). Had a guided tour of the Doges' Palace. Saw a glass-blowing demonstration. Some of us took a boat to the island of Murano and visited several glass factories.
Day 4 -- Venice & Florence
Transferred to Florence, birthplace of the Italian language, the Renaissance and opera. Took guided sightseeing tour of Florence. Visited Giotto's Bell Tower in the Piazza del Duomo. Visited the legendary Gates of Paradise. Saw final resting places of Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo. Attended leather workshop. Had free time in Florence.
Day 5 -- Pisa, Florence, Siena
Excursion to Pisa and Siena. Spent the morning in the medieval city of Sienna, and the afternoon in Pisa.
Day 6 -- Florence & Assisi & Rome
Visited the meidieval city of Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare, and had a guided tour of the Basilica. Arrived in Rome. Had a guided bus tour of Rome.
Day 7 -- Rome
Guided excursion to Vatican City. Visited the Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum, and the St. Peter's Basilica. Had guided sightseeing tour of the Colosseum and Forum Romanum.
Day 8-- Excursion to Pompeii
We viewed the ruins of villas, ancient temples and Stabian Baths to learn how wealthy Romans lived 2,000 years ago. Saw Mt. Vesuvius from every vantage point.
Day 9 -- Amalfi Coast
Transfer via Caserta to the Amalfi Coast
Continued to the Amalfi Coast with a stop in Caserta in the Campania region (birthplace of pizza, spaghetti and buffalo mozzarella.) Caserta sits among hills in southern Italy and is best known for its opulent Royal Palace, built by Charles IV to rival Versailles. We saw what the Italian Baroque style was like as we explored some of the 1200 rooms open to the public.
Day 10 -- Capri & Sorrento
We crossed the Bay of Naples to the captivating Isle of Capri. We visited the very top of the Island by lift and Anacapri. Spent free time in Sorrento. Had bus tour of the Amalfi Coast and visited the seaport town of Positano.
Day 11 -- Montecassino & Rome
Visited the Abbey of Montecassino. Begun in 529 A.D. by St. Benedict, this monastery was destroyed and rebuilt four times. Explored the Basilica Cathedral, gift shop and more. Returned to Rome.
Day 12--Rome
Enjoyed a free day in Rome. Shopped and visited the Spanish Steps, English tea houses and more.
Day 13 -- Returned home via Frankfurt, Germany.

Tour Requirements:
All tour members will designate some aspect of Italian culture or behavior they want to study. Study tour members are studying on-line and visiting links about the places we will be visiting. We will also have one or several half-day meetings in late April to early May.
During the study tour we will be keeping a journal and taking photos for a photographic essay on our studies and experiences. Students who are studying particular aspects of Italian culture and behavior will be responsible for developing a report on their specific content area(s).
We will then compile our tour findings with pictures, essays and descriptions on a Web site for public education and viewing. Tour participants will be receiving an EF backpack and guide, and a journal to keep notes on the trip at the May meeting.
