Note to Students of Psychology:

Below are suggested assignments you should be engaged in to get the full appreciation and learning from each sub area of psychology during the semester.  Some assignments will be required for classwork and will be designated by your Professor during classtime.  Other assignments listed below are recommended and you can earn bonus points for completing them.  Your instructor will not ask or remind you about these assignments.  They should be completed and submitted in your homework assignment notebook at the end of each segment.  Home assignment notebooks are due on the date of each exam.

 All assignments should be submitted in a soft binder.  You should purchase notebook dividers and label each section with the corresponding segment names or chapters.  Remember also to keep track of your assignments on your student performance record.  Introduction to Psychological Science I


PSYCHOLOGY 201

Introduction and Overview

Read Prologue and Chapter 1, Myers textbook or e-book.
Develop concept model - "What is Psychology? Make sure you keep a copy of your model to compare with your model at the end of the semester. Your instructor will select some of these models to place on the website. You can also participate in the web board discussion which asks the same question.
Visit web course "Lessons and Handouts" - Review and print "overview of psychology" and "history of psychology". Add your additional notes to these in class lecture and discussion.
Visit the websites of the American Psychological Society and the American Psychological Association and complete worksheet to be submitted to your instructor. Note: Obtain worksheet from your professor.
Visit the Myer's Website and complete quizzes for each assigned chapter.
Visit the related learning links section of the webcourse on Ethics in Psychology. Read or download the APA's "Ethical Principles of Psychologist." Read also about Institutional Review Boards and about the care and use of animals in research. Become familiar with these ethical standards for participation in discussion of case scenarios in class.
For discussion on research and experimentation, go to web course discussion forum and answer 1 question on research on human subjects and 1 question on research on animal subjects.  Participate in dialogue with your classmates and respond to some of their responses.
Complete Psych Sim 5 Modules (4):  For Overview and History: Psychology's Timeline; For Thinking Critically and Research Methods: What's Wrong With This Study?, Descriptive Statistics, &  Correlation.  Submit Completed Worksheets in your homework assignment notebook.


 Neuroscience-Brain and Behavior (Biology of Mind)

Read Chapter 2, Myers textbook or e-book.
Visit Related Learning Links Section of Web Course on Brain and Behavior, review at least 3 links.
Visit Related Learning Links--go to the Harvard Brain Atlas.  Visit and discuss at least 3 brain disorders and describe the lifestyle of the patient.
Go to discussion forum and answer questions on stress and anger, after viewing Power Point presentations and related links.
Visit Myers website and complete  quizzes, and more.

Sensation and Perception

Read Chapter 6, Myers textbook or e-book.
Visit Related Learning Links section of web course on Sensation, review at least 3 links.

Development-The Nature and Nurture of Behavior and the Developing Person

 Motivation and Emotion

Read Chapters 11 & 12, Myers textbook or e-book.
Review handouts and summary notes distributed in class.
Complete learning activities on the Myers website.
Go to the Lessons and Handouts Page and study the critical thinking exercises under "Work Motivation" and "Emotion-Exercise and Physical Arousal." Answer discussion questions.  Post on the Web Board.

Summary Discussion-What is Psychology?

At the beginning of the semester, you were asked to develop your preliminary definition and concept model of psychology.  Now that you have gone through either the first half or second half of this course, please provide your understanding of psychology now.  Post your initial understanding and your current understanding on the web board. Bring your concept model to class at the designated time.  I do hope you saved your pre concept model so you can contrast it with your post concept model.  When displaying these in class, show the original concept model you developed at the beginning of class with the concept model and your understanding at the end of the semester.  Post your final response to this question on the Web Board at the end of the semester.

Review assigned articles.  Make presentation to class.
Develop responses to assigned questions under "lessons and handouts" guidelines on early childhood and middle childhood. Make presentations to class with your group or team.
Go to discussion forum, answer at least two questions on early and middle childhood.
Review the 3 lessons on: Childhood-Historical Perspectives; Childhood: Importance of Play; and Childhood: Effects of Video Games, under "lessons and handouts".  Answer the discussion questions for the lesson on the historical perspectives of child development, and, at minimum, one of the other two lessons and questions on the importance of play or the effects of video games.

Read the book by Erik Erikson: Young Man Luther: A study in Psychoanalysis and History.  You can purchase the book from amazon.com.
Go to "Lessons, Case Studies and Handouts" to Young Man Luther, to review the discussion questions and visit related links on Martin Luther for class discussion and analyses.
Compare and contrast Luther's life, especially the adult years with Erickson's theory of psychosocial development.


Mature Adulthood

Read chapters 23-25 in your textbook on Mature Adulthood, biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial development.
Go to the "Related Links" section on mature adulthood and visit at least 3 links.
Review links on "Centenarians" on the Related Links Page and then go to the discussion forum on Centenarians  and then answer the questions on centenarians on the webboard.
